Pin Valley, in a remote corner of Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, is home to the last village on the Indo-Tibet border. Mud Himachal Pradesh is the last village in the remote Spiti region of Himachal. This village can be covered in a day’s journey from Kaza, Spiti. However, those who like solitude and wish to experience the slow life of the hills should plan a longer visit.
This blog post takes you on a virtual trip to the mud village Spiti. The village is so serene and relaxing that it is hard to describe in words.
Kaza in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh
The journey to this beautiful village in Pin Valley is more unique than the destination. Hardly a minute will pass without clicking some pictures! Well, after visiting Spiti, I can definitely say that a trip to this remote land is a lifetime experience, and you will definitely come back.
Kaza can be the base camp for visiting places worth exploring in Spiti, including Mud Village. Roaming around in Kaza market, you will know in a day that Pin Valley is worth exploring. This region is known for its trekking routes, including that of Pin-Bawa (Kinnaur) and the Pin-Parvati (Kullu) trek. For the lazy bones like me (as if coming to Kaza was not tough enough!), Mud Himachal Pradesh is an easy escape. After exploring other locations like Langza, Tabo, and Hikkim, it was time to head to Mud Village, so I decided to make a quick escape.

Kaza to Mud Himachal Pradesh
The road to Kaza is bumpy enough in patches. However, the advantage of making Kaza your base is that you shall be mentally prepared to travel to remote corners of this region, including the Pin Valley. The road gets muddy and unpaved after a while, and if that is not enough, it is bumpy too. However, this is the beauty of unexplored regions of Himachal Pradesh, and after coming to places like Mud, Himachal Pradesh, you will realize how tough life can get!
The month being September, the sky was blue and clear as if someone had painted a drawing. It is for this reason that it is said that the journey is more beautiful than the destination. With the Spiti River flowing on the left edge and clear views of the Himalayas in the front, for a while, you will feel that Mud Himachal Pradesh is heaven indeed.
Most of the region is devoid of any vegetation (cold desert), while in patches, you can see green. This is the region where people have settled and indulge in cultivation (peas and potatoes). The diversion to Mud Village is at Attargo Bridge, and on turning right and further left, a 2-hour drive shall take you to your destination for the day, Mud, Himachal Pradesh.
Mud Village Spiti
For those who are not familiar with the topography of Himachal Pradesh, it is common in the upper reaches of the state to have small villages. Furthermore, in a remote region like Spiti, the villages are even smaller, and Mud Village is no exception. Few houses, some shops, and a few homestays! This is what Mud in Spiti is all about.
There are 17 small villages in Pin Valley in Spiti. Mud Village is one of these in the cluster. It has around 30 houses and a population of 150-200. Pin Valley, in particular, has seen the shooting of many Bollywood movies, and this has made it popular too. The lush green surroundings of Mud, Himachal Pradesh, make it unique too. Moreover, with Pin River flowing alongside the village, the view is so mesmerizing that you will love to spend some quality time here.
It is also popular with trekkers and travellers for the reason that Mud Himachal Pradesh, is a base for treks like Pin Parvati and Bhaba Pass. Pin Valley National Park is another of the attractions of this region, which makes Mud Village a must-visit location.

What To Do in Mud Himachal Pradesh
Mud Himachal Pradesh is a place for solitude lovers. However, there are a lot of things that you can do in Mud Village. Let us explore some of these here!
Walking Around the Village and Pin River
When you stroll around the Mud village, you will see that the surroundings are pristine. A mere walk of 5-7 minutes shall take you to an unpaved path and finally to the river crossing. A few meters ahead, there is a bifurcation of the road, and one of these leads to a path that finally goes to Bhaba Pass.
The other path leads to the fields of the Mud Village. A make-shift bridge appears (perfect place for clicking some memories), which is over the Pin River. From the other side of this bridge, you will be able to see the Pin Valley.
The road length is around half a kilometer, which circles around Mud Village. One end of this leads to the Gompa in Mud.
As I mentioned earlier, the wooden bridge across Pin River offers the best view in this region, and it is highly recommended that you spend some moments in solitude here.
Where to Stay in Mud Village
The absence of any hotel in Mud Village is a blessing. This has led to the blooming of some homestays here, which offer you a real glimpse of the real life of Mud Himachal Pradesh.
Tara House Homestay
Watching the mighty Himalayas against the blue background of clean skies and the Pin River flowing downstream makes you feel as if you are in heaven. All this from a window of a homestay—yes, that’s what Tara House Homestay is all about.
Add to this some freshly cooked local delicacies and the hospitable behavior of the host who is well learned and can tell you local tales that you shall remember long after you are back from Spiti.

You can check with the owner at +918988062293. There are a couple of others too, but Tara House Homestay is the oldest and perhaps the best.
