Sikkim in December- Unveiling the Beauty of the Himalayas

Gurudongmar Lake

The elevation of 17800 feet, rugged landscape of Himalayas, revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists and Sikhs alike makes Gurudongmar Lake, one of the preferred Sikkim in December visit locations. History and mythology can abundantly be found when you visit this place. Its existence is said to be linked to Guru Padmasambhava.

It is said that when the guru was on a pilgrimage to this region, he found that local people were desperate for water in this area. Guru Padmasambhava thus blessed a portion of this lake and it never froze. To this day, you will find that a portion of this lake has fresh water even when everything around is frozen to the core.

The lake is said to have magical essence. It is said that it can treat fertility problem in women. A temple with colourful flags wavering off stand a testimony to this effect.

In addition, this lake is also said to be the origin of Teesta River. The eternal beauty of the place is reflected in its shrill waters when you can clearly witness the reflection of snowy peaks in its cold waters.

November to June is the best time to visit this lake and many visitors have this as a part of travel itinerary for their Sikkim in December visit plan.

Yumthang

The colourful booms of Yumthang valley which is also known as valley of flowers in Sikkim is another worthy destination to include in Sikkim in December visit plan. This is located at Lachung in North Sikkim region.

Infact, when visitors do not encounter snow at Yumthang they proceed to zero point further ahead during their Sikkim in December expedition to make their journey worth remembering.

Do not expect the flower bloom during winters though. For this, you will have to plan visit from February to June.

To reach here by rail, you can travel up to Lachung Railway Station from where a taxi can be hired to Yumthang valley. Snowcapped peaks will great you during extreme winters in December and your trip would be a life remembering occasion in case you decide to travel to Sikkim in December.

Zuluk

East Sikkim has another worth visiting village by the name of Zuluk. This should be among your Sikkim in December travel plan. Relatively unknown location, its height of 9400 feet above mean sea level makes it an exciting place to visit. High mountains, dense forest and pristine blue lakes are something which will make you fall in love with Zuluk, once you are here.

Zuluk is popular now for its Thambi viewpoint from where you can have breathtaking view of Mount Kanchenjunga. A 2 km long Bhul Bhulayea road is something which will virtually make you fall in love with the place. You will get distinct views of Mount Kanchenjunga from different points on this 2 km trail which if continued will lead you to Gnathang Valley.

If you have ample time with you a visit to Mennmechu Lake at 12500 feet is recommended. This lake has a trout fish cultivation centre and you can get some worthy tips on trout here.

Zulu is 70 Km from Paykong airport in Sikkim and within 3 hours you would be in a different land which is known as Zuluk. You will have to be here to experience it and your Sikkim in December itinerary can definitely have a mention of this.

Festivals in Sikkim

Sikkim in December trip should be planned for a different reason too. During this month a number of festivities are held. Some of the popular ones include Gangtok Winter Festival, Mangan Music Festival and Kayged Festival. Being a part of any of these festivities will give you a clear idea of rich cultural and religious diversity of this hill state which used to be a separate nation till 1960s.
